Dentists will generally try to preserve teeth if we can for functional and esthetic reasons. However, for various reasons, it is sometimes necessary to remove teeth. For example, teeth that have very large cavities that cannot be fixed with fillings and/or crowns will need to be removed to prevent infection and pain. Sometimes, teeth with fractures and abscesses will require extraction. For orthodontic reasons, your orthodontist may recommend removing a few teeth to provide space for alignment. Wisdom teeth are commonly removed if it is perceived by your dentist that they are causing problems or will cause problems in the future. Extractions are done under local anaesthetic, which does not require a long recovery period.
